VISIT CLARENS' ART GALLERIES

Known as the jewel of the Free State, Clarens is a charming artists’ town nestled in the foothills of the Maloti Mountains. Visitors flock here to escape from city life and art lovers are able to get their fill of everything creative at the many galleries scattered through the area.

4X4 TRAILS

For a taste of extreme, head out to Rebellie 4×4 Trail, just 15km from Clarens is one of South Africa’s top 10 4×4 trails. The Rebellie 4×4 Trails offer different routes which are there if you’re demanding a challenge. As well as the bonus of game-viewing opportunities as wildlife is often encountered on the trails.

CLARENS GOLF ESTATE

The course has been tucked up into the basin overlooking Clarens and its mountainous views which surround Mt Horeb. Clarens Golf Course is quite simply, breath-taking. Golfers can expect no less than the best efforts from the ground staff at Clarens and they have proven time and again to be committed to the enjoyment of the game.

CLARENS DINOSAURS

Founded by Dr Gideon Groenewald in 1993, Clarens Dinosaurs is a MUST for those who have an interest in exploring creation and discovering the secrets of the past. This region is full of history and remains of these prehistoric creatures.  Perfect for all ages, this tour takes you back millions of years and allows you to walk in the footsteps of the giants.

MOUNTAIN BIKING

The small quaint town of Clarens, found on the Eastern part of the Free State, don’t be fooled by the country demeanor as there’s lots to do in the mountainous village. Just 8 kilometers from the small town’s hub of Clarens is Bokpoort Mountain Biking Trail. Keep yourself occupied with this ideal extreme sport that’s suitable for the adventurous kind.

This 12-kilometer trail takes about three hours to complete and is rated as being an intermediate to difficult level. This means that it requires considerable strength and fitness and is not appropriate for beginners or children.

It’s a technical loop trail, consisting of about four loops. Some of the trail includes rock pools and waterfalls, through which it’s sometimes necessary to climb off the bicycle and push it, rather than cycle. The activities that take place in and amongst the town’s famous and majestic Maluti Mountain that this ‘jewel’ of a town is known for. Bokpoort Mountain Biking Trail is nestled within these surrounds.

HIKING TRAILS

Clarens is well known for the many hiking trails available in the area – ranging from short easy trails, ideal for an evening stroll with the family,  to longer or more demanding trails for those looking to get some exercise or simply spend some time in the fresh air.

Clarens Village Nature Reserve’s trails are well marked and easily accessible from town. There is an entry charge for hikers and mountain bikers. Permits are available at reception at Mont d’Or Clarens Hotel or Clarens Xtreme at 530 Sias Oosthuizen Street. The trails are well marked and maps of the trails are available from Bibliophile, Protea Hotel, Mountain Odyssey, Old Stone Bottle Store, Maluti Footprints, and The Gallery On The Square.
